The Obama administration wants to keep people collecting Social Security benefits from owning guns if it is determined they are unable to manage their own affairs, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The push, which could potentially affect millions whose monthly disability payments are handled by others, is intended to bring the Social Security Administration in line with laws that prevent gun sales to felons, drug addicts, immigrants in the United States illegally, and others, according to the paper.
The language of federal gun laws restricts ownership to people who are unable to manage their own affairs due to “marked subnormal intelligence, or mental illness, incompetency, condition, or disease” – which could potentially affect a large group within Social Security, the LA Times reported.
If Social Security, which has never taken part in the background check system, uses the same standard as the Department of Veterans Affairs – which is the idea floated – then millions of beneficiaries could be affected, with about 4.2 million adults receiving monthly benefits that are managed by “representative payees.”
The latest move is part of the efforts by President Obama to strengthen gun control following the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in 2012.
Critics are blasting the plan, saying that expanding the list of people who cannot own guns based on financial competence is wrongheaded.

Atlanta radio show “The Bert Show” had a guest on this week who has managed to incite the rage of just about every millennial in the state of Georgia (and beyond, the show is syndicated in 11 states).
The show’s hosts try to give Kim the benefit of the doubt. She’s come to them (for some untold reason — perhaps a financial aid officer would have been a wiser choice) in a time of great need and they at least want to try to help her.
But what followed has to be one of the most painful interviews that has ever been aired on national radio. Kim manages to personify just about every parent’s worst nightmare — an entitled 20-something who asks for handouts rather than face the very real financial challenges of young adulthood. You can listen to the full interview online at TheBertShow.com, but we’ve shared the highlights of Kim’s cringe-inducing description of her predicament below.
“I used it to budget for school clothes and college break money. I probably should have not done that. I took a trip to Europe. The Europe thing I thought was part of my education and that’s how I tried to justify that.”
“Maybe [my parents] should have taught me to budget or something. They never sat me down and had a real serious talk about it.”
“[My parents] said there was nothing they could do for me. They’re not being honest with me saying they don’t have [money] because my dad has worked for like a million years and they have a retirement account.”
“Then my parents suggested I go take out a loan at a credit union and I’m, like, how am I supposed to do that?”
“I have to go inside the bank to get a loan?”
Bert Show co-host Jeff Dauler: “You could get a job for the school …maybe the cafeteria’s hiring.”
“I know they’re trying to teach me a lesson and blah blah blah and character building but, like, I hope they realize [working part-time] could have such a negative effect on my grades and as a person.”
Here’s what’s most infuriating about Kim’s situation: Not only is she admitting that she had — and squandered — a $90,000 college fund that was supposed to cover her college expenses , but she completely lacks any remorse. She says she feels “stressed” but not once does she seem grateful for her good fortune or ashamed about blowing it in three short years.
Laura Browder, a single mother of two kids, was looking for a fresh start in Houston.
She took her 6-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son along with her to a Houston mall where she had a job interview. She didn’t have enough time to arrange for child care, so she sat her children down in the food court near a McDonald’s and went to her interview — also in the food court. The interview wasn’t for a job at the mall, but both parties agreed to meet there.
According to Browder, she wasn’t more than 30 feet away from her children at any point and they were always in her line of sight. After Browder returned to her children, a police officer walked up to where they were and arrested her just moments after she had accepted the job.
CPS officials say they’re still in the early stages of their investigation, but added they could offer services to help Browder find suitable daycare.
In a statement, Browder said:
This was very unfortunate this happened. I had a interview with a very great company with lots of career growth. I am a college student and mother of two. I would never put my name, background or children in harms way intentionally. I have a promising future ahead of me regardless of what the media tries to portray me as. A judge released my children to me knowing that I was a good mother who just made a not so smart decision. My children weren’t even 30 yards away from me, I fed them and sat there with them until it was time to meet with my interviewer. This too will pass and I am not concerned with outsiders have to say or what they think.
She appeared before a judge who released her and gave her full custody of her children.

In a March 2, 2007, report, The Baltimore Sun noted an ironic twist about the man who would become the first African American president of the United States: Forebears of his white mother owned slaves themselves.
As reported by the paper:
According to the research, one of Obama’s great-great-great-great grandfathers, George Washington Overall, owned two slaves who were recorded in the 1850 census in Nelson County, Ky. The same records show that one of Obama’s great-great-great-great-great-grandmothers, Mary Duvall, also owned two slaves.
The records reviewed by the Sun show that Overall, who was 30 at the time, owned a 15-year-old black girl and a 25-year-old black man. Mary Duvall, his mother-in-law, owned a 60-year-old black male and a 58-year-old black female. The paper noted further that during the period around the 1850 census slaves were listed by owner, age, sex and “colour,” not by name.
When the Sun contacted the Obama campaign, a spokesman did not refute the information, brushing off the history by claiming Obama’s ancestors “are representative of America.”

Governor Paul LePage of Maine passed a measure last year that requires recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program to complete a certain number of work, job-training, or volunteer hours in order to be eligible for assistance. The new requirement has resulted in a dramatic decline in food stamp enrollment
Now that individuals have to complete either 20 hours of part-time work a week, volunteer for at least 24 hours per month, or get involved in a vocational program, the amount of SNAP recipients has dramatically dropped from 12,000 to approximately 2,500
