What is involved with educating a child with Autism, particularly when it comes to public schools? We go into this question, as well as giving out many resources to help on this episode of Adventures in Autism.

Adventures in Autism is a show about our experiences with our son, Seth, diagnosed with Severe Autism at the age of 3. It has been a difficult journey, but an adventure nonetheless.

Each week, we will bring you a different topic and how it relates to a child with autism. Topics will include things like siblings, favorite foods, toys that work (and ones that don’t!), schooling, emotions and more.

The show will air on Mondays and Fridays at 12:00 PM and 12:00 AM EST.

IF you have a story of your own relating to autism, please contact us and come be a part of the show.

The following are the show notes used to record this episode. They are here for your reference and convenience.

Currently, for both of our children, including Seth, we use the following resources:

What we have used in the past…

Now, there are other things that we use that do not rely fully on websites and such, but we thought we would include them here for you.

Thse would be things like…

Flash cards
TV shows.  These would include Bill Nye The Science Guy, Beakman’s World, Magic Schoolbus,
We also do arts and crafts projects with them every week, along with Music, health and history.

We make sure to touch on more complex subjects with Crystal, and tailor things fr Seth’s particular needs.

Which Crystal sometimes finds unfair  😉

Worksheets, hand made tests, and Seth gets two weekly language arts worksheets

Reading, creative writing, Geography for Crystal, and handwriting skills, especially including cursive.

We also do science projects frequently, which both kids enjoy.

Now, there are some other resources that we use infrequently, but we thought we would present them here.

Surprisingly, one of the biggest has to do with Minecraft.

Previously, we hand-made maps/worlds in the game that had buildings containing math problems that the children would have to solve in order to progress.  They really got a kick out of that game play, including Seth.

This year, for Crystal, in particular,we are making use of a special Minecraft home school setup.  We found it at Minecraft Homeschool http://minecrafthomeschool.com/.

We treat it as a homework assignment for Crystal and she really enjoys her time in it.

There are also a few Minecraft servers that have been set up specifically for Autistic children.  One of those is called AUTCraft www.autcraft.com

For an entertaining way to learn history and social studies, you can also go to YouTube, and find The Liberty Kids.   Seth and crystal both enjoyedc watching and learning from them, and it’s really worthwhile to use.  I just wish they would make more.

Now, of course, tailoring your needs for your particular child is important.  Some of these things may be a little complex or your child may be more advanced than these things.  However, it’s a good starting point to explore what is possible.

We really do recommend homeschooling, for any child, really, but especially for one that has such special needs as Autism.

Since we have been homeschooling Seth, his progression has been smoother, and a lot more friendly, than it was while he was in public schooling.

Your mileage may vary, but, it would be worth looking into for yourselves.
